What is Lean Manufacturing?

Lean Manufacturing uses structured methods to reduce waste, increase efficiency and reduce waste. They were developed in Japan by Toyota Motor Corporation (in the 1980s). The goal was to produce quality products at lower cost. Lean manufacturing emphasizes removing unnecessary steps from the production process. It includes five main elements: pull systems (continuous improvement), continuous improvement (just-in-time), kaizen (5S), and continuous change (continuous changes). Pull systems involve producing only what the customer wants without any extra work. Continuous improvement is constantly improving upon existing processes. Just-in-time refers to when components and materials are delivered directly to the point where they are needed. Kaizen is continuous improvement. This can be achieved by making small, incremental changes every day. Last but not least, 5S is for sort. These five elements are combined to give you the best possible results.

Lean Production System

The lean production system is based on six key concepts:

  • Flow: The goal is to move material and information as close as possible from customers.
  • Value stream mapping - break down each stage of a process into discrete tasks and create a flowchart of the entire process;
  • Five S’s - Sorted, In Order. Shine. Standardize. And Sustain.
  • Kanban - visual cues such as stickers or colored tape can be used to track inventory.
  • Theory of constraints: identify bottlenecks in your process and eliminate them using lean tools, such as kanban board.
  • Just-intime - Order components and materials at your location right on the spot.
  • Continuous improvement - Make incremental improvements rather than overhauling the entire process.
