What is Lean Manufacturing?

Lean Manufacturing uses structured methods to reduce waste, increase efficiency and reduce waste. They were developed by Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan during the 1980s. It was designed to produce high-quality products at lower prices while maintaining their quality. Lean manufacturing is about eliminating redundant steps and activities from the manufacturing process. It consists of five basic elements: pull systems, continuous improvement, just-in-time, kaizen (continuous change), and 5S. Pull systems involve producing only what the customer wants without any extra work. Continuous improvement involves constantly improving upon existing processes. Just-intime refers the time components and materials arrive at the exact place where they are needed. Kaizen stands for continuous improvement. Kaizen can be described as a process of making small improvements continuously. Fifth, the 5S stand for sort, set up in order to shine, standardize, maintain, and standardize. These five elements can be combined to achieve the best possible results.

Lean Production System

Six key concepts form the foundation of the lean production system:

  • Flow - focus on moving material and information as close to customers as possible;
  • Value stream mapping - break down each stage of a process into discrete tasks and create a flowchart of the entire process;
  • Five S's, Sort, Set in Order, Shine. Standardize. and Sustain.
  • Kanban is a visual system that uses visual cues like stickers, colored tape or stickers to keep track and monitor inventory.
  • Theory of constraints: Identify bottlenecks and use lean tools such as kanban boards to eliminate them.
  • Just-intime - Order components and materials at your location right on the spot.
  • Continuous improvement is making incremental improvements to your process, rather than trying to overhaul it all at once.
